Enrolled Agent vs. CPA: Which Tax Professional Do You Need?

When business owners in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley look for tax help, they usually see two credentials: Enrolled Agent (EA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Both are respected and both can prepare your returns. But they come from different places and tend to focus on different work.

What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent is a tax practitioner federally authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. The credential is earned by passing a comprehensive three-part IRS exam covering individual taxation, business taxation, and representation, practices and procedures, or through qualifying experience as a former IRS employee. EAs must also pass a background check and complete continuing education to keep their status.

Enrolled Agents practice under Treasury Department Circular 230, and because the credential is federal it is recognized in every state.

What is a CPA?

A CPA is licensed by a state board of accountancy after meeting education requirements, passing the Uniform CPA Examination and gaining experience. Many focus on financial statement audits, attest work and general accounting, while others specialize in tax.

Key differences at a glance

  • Who grants it: EA: U.S. Department of the Treasury (federal). CPA: state boards of accountancy.
  • Focus: EA: federal taxation. CPA: broad accounting, auditing and, for some, tax.
  • Audited financial statements: Only CPAs (through licensed firms) can issue audit opinions.
  • Tax returns and planning: Both can prepare returns and advise on tax strategy.

Which one should you hire?

If a lender, investor or regulator requires audited or reviewed financial statements, you need a CPA firm for that engagement. If your priority is tax planning and tax preparation, an Enrolled Agent’s specialization in federal tax law is often exactly what you need.

Many businesses use both: a CPA for attest work and an EA-led firm for year-round tax strategy.

Questions to ask any tax professional

  • How often will we meet during the year, not just at filing time?
  • Do you work with businesses in my industry?
  • Will the same person who plans my taxes also prepare my return?
  • How do you document the positions taken on my return?
